This is the training session

What is kickboxing?

Kickboxing is a martial art that combines boxing techniques with kicks. You’ll learn the basic stance, footwork, punches, kicks and how to link these movements together in combinations. We practise technique on pads and punching bags and through controlled partner drills.

The training provides both technical instruction and physical activity, but you don’t need to be in good shape before you start. Your fitness, coordination and confidence are built up gradually. Nor are you pressured into taking part in sparring or matches in order to participate.

We learn to make mistakes. You get to try things out, make adjustments and have another go. You don’t need to be in top form before you start – just come as you are and build on that.

Clear progression

You’ll learn the basic techniques first and build on them at a pace that’s easy to follow.

We learn to fail

It’s normal for new movements not to come naturally straight away. You’ll be given guidance, make adjustments and try again.

Controlled environment

The level of contact and intensity are tailored to the task, your experience and your partner.

Frequently asked questions

Before you arrive

What is kickboxing?

Kickboxing is a martial art involving punches, kicks, footwork and combinations. During training, we use pads, punching bags and controlled partner drills, amongst other things. You can train for the sake of learning, physical activity and socialising without having to fight or compete.

Who can take up kickboxing?

The class is for ages 14 and over. You don’t need any previous experience and will start in the beginners’ class, where basic stances, movements, punches, kicks and simple combinations are taught step by step.

What do you mean by «we learn to make mistakes»?

Mistakes are part of the training process. You’ll get to try out techniques that may be difficult at first, make use of the guidance you’re given, make adjustments and try again. The aim is to improve over time – not to get everything right at the first attempt.

Do I need to be in good shape?

No. You build up your fitness gradually through training. You work at your own level and take breaks when necessary.

Do I have to fight or compete?

No. You can practise kickboxing for the sake of learning, keeping fit and socialising, without competing.

Will I have to spar?

No. Contact training is introduced in a controlled manner and tailored to your level and experience. Please let the instructor know if you are unsure or do not wish to spar.

What should I wear to my first training session?

Wear normal workout clothes without zips, metal or sharp details. You’ll be exercising barefoot. Bring a water bottle and a bag for your clothes and belongings.

Do I need my own boxing gloves?

Not during the trial period. You can borrow the necessary equipment. Once you’ve signed up, the instructor will help you choose the right size and equipment. Don’t buy any equipment at random before you know what the group uses.

What protective equipment will I need later on?

As your training progresses, you’ll use boxing gloves and other protective equipment suited to the exercises. The need for this equipment increases gradually. The instructor will clearly let you know what you need and when you need it.

How do I tie the belt?

Se video: Slik knytter du beltet. Videoen viser hele fremgangsmåten steg for steg.

Are belts and grading compulsory?

No. You can train without taking a grading. For those who wish to do so, the belts provide clear milestones. Attendance, skills and registration by the deadline are all taken into account in the assessment.

When do I need to meet?

Please arrive 10–15 minutes before the class so that you have time to get changed and be ready. If you arrive after the class has started, you’ll have to wait until the next session.

Where can I park?

When parking outside Ægirsvei 10, your car's number plate must be registered to receive 2.5 hours of free parking.

Can I exercise whilst injured?

Tell the instructor about your injury before the class. Some adjustments can be made, but you must follow the advice given to you by a doctor or other healthcare professional. In the event of an acute injury or pain, you should not push yourself through the session.

What are the hygiene requirements?

Wear clean sportswear, keep your nails short and remove any jewellery, watches and piercings that could cause injury to yourself or others. Do not exercise if you have a fever, a contagious illness, contagious skin conditions or open wounds.

Can I wear shoes on the mat?

No. We train barefoot on the mat. Please wear slippers or other clean footwear when going to and from the changing room and to the toilet. Outdoor shoes must be left on the shoe rack.

How do I book and register for the training session?

Adults book their session in Membro before training and confirm their attendance when they arrive. Attendance cannot be registered retrospectively. Correct registration is important for keeping track of attendance and for any grading.
